FIELDWORK

The stylish streets of Lisbon: from Chiado to Avenida da Liberdade

Saturday, September 16th, 2017. 10am-5pm.

The Chiado and Avenida da Liberdade belong to the most elegant streets of Lisbon. From being public promenades frequented by the bourgeoisie at the end of the 1800s and the first quarter of the 20th century, in recent decades, they have become the favorite places for luxury and fashion stores, turning into a showcase of international capital. With this experience of fieldwork, we intend to show you the time path following these two emblematic places of the city. In this context, we will make you three invitations. The first is that, for a few moments, you step back at the end of the nineteenth century and imagine yourself walking around these places. For this purpose, you wear the clothes of the flâneur and the flâneuse, who have been strutting around for long hours with the deliberate intention of seeing and being seen. The second invitation is that you go back to the present and actively look at the landscape, and of course wonder about the reasons that best explain the concentration of luxury retailing in these two areas of the city. Finally, the third invitation is for you to reflect on what truly changed from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century.
