BACKGROUND
The International Seminar City, Retail and Consumption is a privileged forum for the discussion of issues relating to retail and consumption in the urban context. With a biennial organization, through this forum, geographers, urbanists and urban planners, from Europe and Latin America, have shared research experiences in different geographical contexts and contributed to the progress of theoretical and applied knowledge in this scientific field, reflected in planning and public policies of the cities. This event discusses concepts, perspectives and methodologies, case studies are presented and the role of retail and consumption in the production, management and the liveability of the contemporary city is debated.
Since 2006, this international seminar has had five editions. The first was held in Rio de Janeiro (2006) and had as central theme "City and Services: the multiple approaches of the commercial street". The second was held in Barcelona (2009) and focused the debate on "Cities, urban commerce and consumption”. The third took place in São Paulo (2012) and it discussed the "Mutations in the commercial and service spaces and the consumption in the contemporary society”. The fourth was in Naples (2013) and had as central theme "The approach of the new spatiality and temporality of urban retail and consumption in an international context" Finally, the fifth edition was held in Mexico city (2015) and had as central theme "the diversification of consumption and retail in the contemporary city: actors and processes”.
The VI International Seminar City, Retail and Consumption will be held between 12 and 16 September 2017 in Lisbon, under the auspices of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) and the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG) of the Universidade de Lisboa.
